Homemade Tater Tots

Tired of frozen tater tots? Check out this recipe for homemade tater tots. They’re better than the frozen ones and so easy to make. 


  • 1 kg potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried dill
  • salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • vegetable oil
  • chopped fresh parsley leaves (optional)

Serves 3-4 people, I made 25 tater tots out of it.

Garlic powder, onion powder, dill … these are all optional. You can use something else instead of these. I didn’t use onion powder and dried dill but I put dried basil in it and it was also very good.


1.) Place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. When the water boils, cook potatoes for about 6-7 minutes. Drain them well and wait until they’re cool.


2.) Take a grater and finely shred potatoes.


3.) Mix flour, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, dill and pepper in a large bowl. Then season it with salt, to taste.


4.) Put potatoes in the same bowl and mix it. You can do it using a hand or a spoon. Then form potatoes into tots or whatever shape you want them to. You can do small balls or just like I did.


5.) Heat vegetable oil over medium heat and add tots. Cook until they’re golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Put a paper towel on a plate so it will absorb extra oil.

6.) It is best if you serve immediately. You can add chopped fresh parsley leaves but it’s not necessary.
